OBJECTIVE

• To provide knowledge to the pupil teachers related to teacher education.
• To encourage   students and teachers for research and innovation related to elementary education.
• To assist the elementary teachers in classroom teaching practice evaluations etc.
• To monitor the academic activities taken place at the elementary level in the district and review the same at periodic interval.

MISSION

             Kothari Commission of education has  indicated the importance of school and classroom teaching in his opening sentence "The destiny of India is being shaped in her classroom". NPE, 1986 states "spread of literacy has been an important programme since independence  Education commission (1964-66) has observed that all the factors that influence the quality of education, the scholastic achievement, competence and character of the teacher are undoubtedly the most significant". But these in turn depend substantially on the quality of training and other support provided to them. Until the adoption of National Policy of Education this support in the area of elementary education was being provided by the institutions like NCERT,NIEPA,and SCERTs. Similarly in the area of Adult education. this support was being provided by the Central  Directorate of Adult Education at the national level and State Resource Centers (SRCs) at the state level. Below the state there were Basic Training Institutes but there role were confined to pre-service teacher training hence the challenges like teaching practice, curriculum development, research and innovation etc. remain untouched.
            NPE envisaged an addition of third district level tier to support EE and Adult Education in the shape of DIETs. In every district with the introduction of third layer of support system expectation would be wider to improve EE quantitatively and qualitatively.
            The main task of DIET to lend academic and resource support to the grass root level for the successful implementation of various strategies and programme concern with EE and Adult Education.
